Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with an introduction to modern Indonesian, to enable them to converse in Indonesian and read and write Indonesian at a basic level. The course will also prepare students for their first meeting with Indonesian and Balinese society and culture.

Course Description

The course is an elementary and intensive language course which is taught in Bali. The course will provide students with basic skills in Indonesian. The course is suitable for students who have no knowledge of Indonesian.

Learning Methods

Roughly 100 hours of lectures and seminars spread over 12 weeks, with the main concentration in the first 4 weeks. Students are expected to actively study and participate in the course. Assessment of students’ level and progress will be carried out at regular intervals during the course.

Assessment Methods

The examination is divided into 2 parts:

  1. An oral examination of roughly 45 minutes, with a conversation in Indonesian on a topic which has been covered during the course, and Indonesian texts which should be read aloud and discussed.
  2. A 3-hour written examination.

Each part of the examination counts for 50%. Students must receive passing marks in both parts of the examination in order to achieve a passing mark for the course. Grades A to F.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
