Course Objectives
The course aims to introduce students to the culture of native Mexican people as expressed through art, handicrafts and monuments. The course will show the relation between modern Mexican and pre-Columbian art, and provide an introduction to Frida Kahlo’s life and work, and the importance of the Mexican Muralist Movement’s work.
Course Description
Students will acquire knowledge of pre-Columbian and modern art and the history of art from the period of the Olmec culture up through the Aztec culture, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and the Muralist Movement. The course includes a theoretical introductory section in which an outline of Mexico’s history is taught, in order to provide students with a framework for the course.
Learning Methods
Lectures, seminars and visits to museums and monuments.
The course will be taught over a period of 5 weeks. Students are expected to actively study and participate. Assessments of level and progress will be carried out at regular intervals during the course.
Assessment Methods
Assessment for the course consists of an obligatory assignment which counts for 40% and a final 3-hour examination which counts for 60% of the final grade. The student must receive passing marks in both parts of the assessment in order to receive a final passing mark. Grades: A-F.
