Course Objectives
The goal of the course is to provide students with practice in developing effective spoken and written English in realistic situations.
Course Description
The main emphasis will be on training and exercises in a variety of written styles/formats (e-mail, correspondence, essays, reports, CVs, applications). In addition, stress will be placed on oral exercises such as presentations, meetings and conversation-practice etc.
The course will be particularly useful for:
• Students who wish to strengthen their competence in the practical use of the English language in, for example, work-situations.
• Students who are interested in studying English.
• Students specialising in other fields who are planning foreign studies requiring good competence in English.
• Norwegian students planning to take degrees in subjects where the lectures are in English.
• Foreign students who need to improve their abilities in practical English.
Learning Methods
Lectures and seminars. Four hours of lectures per week in the autumn semester.
A minimum of 80% attendance in the seminars is required.
Assessment Methods
The students will be evaluated during the course on the basis of tests and/or submitted assignments which will count for 40% of the total grade. The final examination will count for 60%. All tests taken during the course as well as the final examination must receive passing marks in order for the student to pass the course.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
