Course Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide students with knowledge of art theory, aesthetics, Norwegian and international contemporary art, especially in the context of dissemination and promotion of art. The course will be structured into lectures, seminars and study trips. Students will write assignments in which they give interpretations and criticism of works of art.

Course Description

The course will focus on contemporary art’s forms of expression, new media and new art forms, and on their technical aspects, exhibition and interpretation.

Learning Methods

The course will consist of two work-shops, lectures, seminars and study trips. Students will write reports about the study trips, and give a presentation on art theory in connection with one of the exhibitions.

Assessment Methods

The first course unit: Students will be required to give an oral presentation on contemporary art and art theory. The presentation must also be submitted as a written paper. The oral presentation and written paper together will represent 40% of the final grade.

The second course unit: Students will be required to submit reports about the study trips. The final examination is an individual take-home assignment, which will represent 60% of the final grade. The student must achieve passing grades in both parts of the assessment in order to earn a final passing grade for the course.
