Medical Microbiology and Immunology 4314
Course Objectives
The students will learn about the most important human pathogenic microbes (bacteria and viruses), their characteristics, how they are identified and the diseases which are associated with them. They will also be introduced to the use of viruses in medical treatment (such as in gene-therapy).
Course Description
Central themes:
 Bacteria and viruses as sources of illness and how the body defends itself against them
 Alternatives for treatment/therapy
 The development of resistance against medication
 In the laboratory course, the students work with diagnostic principles which are used to identify pathogenic agents and with methods for confirming resistance
Learning Methods
60 hours of lectures, a laboratory course and seminars/ colloquiums.
Assessment Methods
Grades will be given for five part-exams with portfolio evaluations: four home assignments will count for 10% each and a final 5-hour written examination will count for the remaining 60% of the final grade. All the part-exams must receive passing grades.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
