Biogeography 10BIOGEO

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course students will have acquired key skills in plant and animal geography. They will be able to document especially advanced knowledge of the Mediterranean region, which is the subject area specialisation. Moreover, the student should be able to document the knowledge of the Earth’s climate zones and how climate influences plant and animal geography. Students will gain experience in documenting skills in biological fieldwork.

Course Description

The course focuses on vegetation zones, flora kingdoms, Arctic flora and fauna, protection of biological diversity, protection of the cultural landscape, general plant and animal geography, flora, fauna and conservation in the Mediterranean. A 7-day field course to Mallorca will be carried out in order to study vegetation types, nature reserves, landscape conservation areas and cultural landscapes. The course is described in greater detail in room Bi 3 and Bi 4 on Classfronter.
The teaching and learning methods will alternate between lectures and independent study with online guidance, and opportunities for collaboration between students on the Internet using Classfronter (LMS). The course includes obligatory fieldwork in the field course in Majorca.

Learning Methods

Instruction and guidance on the subject is given in the spring semester which concludes with a written exam. A mandatory field course to Mallorca (specialisation area) is included in the course, which will be held at the end of April. A bio-geographical project will also be included. The course is suited for distance education via the Internet. The field course to Mallorca is also mandatory when the course is taken as a distance education course.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment will provide a final grade based on a graded scale. The grade is based on the individual 4-hour written exam. The field course must be approved before the student may take the examination.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
