Statics and Steel with a Project BY4006
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the students should:
- be familiar with basic statics
- be able to formulate and demonstrate the fundamental requirements of equilibrium, kinematics and material behaviour
- know the basic calculation methods for load-bearing constructions built of planks, beams and/or columns
- use programmes for carrying out the statics calculations which are necessary for construction
- be acquainted with dimensioning principles and be able to dimension simple construction elements of steel
- be capable of using programmes to dimension construction elements of steel
Course Description
Calculation of displacements, moments, axial- and shear-forces for statically uncertain constructions through the use of virtual work and the load-unit method, the displacement method and the Cross-method, and briefly on the displacement method formulated as a matrix. Structural failure calculations for beams and frames. 2nd order theory and solution. Steel as a building material and simple dimensioning work.
Learning Methods
Lectures, calculation practical assignments and project work.
Assessment Methods
The course evaluation will be based on one course component examinations counting a total of 10% , a project assignment which will count for 30% and a final examination which will count 60% of the final grade.
Before being allowed to sit each examination, at least 75% of the respective practical assignments must have been completed and approved.
The final examination must receive a passing grade.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
