517 Examen Philosophicum & Examen Facultatum

Introduction

Examen philosophicum and examen facultatum are obligatory courses in most Bachelor’s-degree programmes in humanities, social sciences and language majors.

Target Group and Admission Requirements

Examen philosophicum and examen facultatum are mandatory parts of bachelor’s-degree programmes at Telemark University College in traditional university subjects (that is, in the degree programmes where a university will require examen philosophicum/examen facultatum). For other programmes at Telemark University College, the examen philosophicum and examen facultatum are offered to students who seek a general foundation for their university college studies, in addition to those students who are planning university studies.

Applicants must meet general university college admission requirements.

Aim of the Programme

The primary intention of the study program is to provide students with a general foundation for their studies at university college/university level. The students will receive an introduction to theoretical, practical and ethical approaches to problems that are relevant to various scientific disciplines and activities. Through this introduction, the students will develop the ability to adopt a more independent and systematic approach to academic and theoretical subjects.

Further Education opportunities

This programme is a two-part foundation programme. Each part may be completed independently. It is a preparatory programme, and should therefore be taken at an early point in a student’s studies. Examen Philosophicum is usually taught in the autumn semester, and Examen Facultatum in the spring semester. For a full semester study-load, the student must take a supplementary course worth 10 ECTS credits.

Acceptable courses might include linguistics, environmental philosophy and ethics or other courses offered by the department.
