Course Objectives

The course will provide students with field and laboratory experience in the planning, execution, drafting, collaborative writing and presentation of scientific investigations of vertebrates, based on various scientific methods.

Course Description

The students will participate in fieldwork or laboratory work on research projects at the institute. The investigations will involve either different field and laboratory ecological methods, or the analysing of previously collected data using established ecological techniques. Students will write a report from their chosen topic/project with references to relevant scientific literature. A draft of the introduction and the method sections will be submitted to the teacher(s) half way through the semester. A final written report will be submitted at the end of the semester and also presented orally for the class and two teachers.

Learning Methods

Obligatory: Lectures (14 hours), field excursions (2 days), guidance (10 hours per group) in collection of data, drafting, collaborative writing and presentation of collected data (1 day). Individual work: roughly 80 hours.

Assessment Methods

The course grade will be given on the basis of the submitted research report and oral presentation.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
