Curating 3324
Course Objectives
The course has several aims. For instance, it aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the place and the conditions art has in society, and to provide them with the skills needed to evaluate, plan, organize and disseminate art exhibitions. The course is aimed at people who regularly arrange art exhibitions at art institutions; for instance employees; also representatives, trainees and other permanent or temporary staff.
The course will also be suited to students who require a practical and theoretical supplement to a Bachelor’s degree in art history, culture, education, or the arts.
Learning Methods
The course is structured so that it will be possible to combine studies with full-time employment. The course comprises teaching, supervision, self-study and assignment work. It includes two one-week workshops per semester with two introductory days in the first semester. The web-based learning platform Fronter will be an essential teaching and learning tool; between the workshops, communication between course coordinator, lecturers and participants will be maintained. It is therefore essential that students have access to the Internet and e-mail.
The two workshops in the autumn semester will be linked to the full time course 3323 The Mediation of Visual Art. The course includes some day trips to art institutions in Telemark; students will have to cover the costs, and they may also have to arrange transportation. The planning and execution of an exhibition project in Bø will be carried out during the last workshop in the second semester.
Assessment Methods
A written group assignment in the autumn semester counts 20%; an individual written assignment in the spring semester counts 40%; and a written 5-hour final examination related to the curriculum in the spring semester counts 40%. Letter grades will be used, where A to E represent passing grades, and F a failing grade. All assignments must be passed in order to obtain a passing grade for the course. Eighty per cent participation is required. If students are absent for more than 20%, they will have to sit an oral examination, which will be based on the curriculum. In addition, the group assignment and the individual home assignment must receive passing marks before students may take the final written examination.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
