882 Mathematics 2 (Starting date autumn semester 2010)
Introduction
Mathematics is an important aspect of our culture, both as a science and as a tool in a variety of fields, including other sciences. Mathematics also plays a major role in many forms of creative activity. Consequently, mathematics is a major subject in primary and secondary schools as well as in the general teacher education programme. In learning mathematics while studying to become teachers, students will meet the subject in a variety of contexts. In addition to honing their teaching skills and understanding of mathematics, we will emphasise the nature of the subject and how children learn mathematics.
Target Group and Admission Requirements
Student teachers.
Aim of the Programme
The study programme will examine important mathematical topics such as functions, statistics and probability. The teaching aspect is emphasised, and students will also become more familiar with mathematics on its own terms. It is a goal that students who have specialised in mathematics will be able to function as resource persons in the subject area. The aims are described in detail in each of the modules (below).
Curriculum and structure
|
Mathematics 2 is divided into the following target areas:
- Module 1 covers the target area calculus.
- Module 2 covers the target area statistics and probability
- The target area didactics is included in both modules.
The two modules comprise 15 ECTS credits each; the study programme 30 ECTS credits in total.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Mathematics 2 runs over the whole of the academic year, with final examinations in May / June. Four hours of instruction will be offered in each of the modules in the teaching-weeks (specified in the semester plan). A teaching sequence will consist of both a lecture and exercises, but the teaching schedule is flexible. In addition, students will be offered individual guidance in work on assignments.
Didactics is included in Mathematics 2. The work on didactics is divided into two parts, and includes the submission of work at the end of each semester.
Theory and Practical Training
3rd years students, who take the subject as part of their foundation studies, will also complete a period of practical training.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
