Introduction to Child Welfare Work 070-E1

Course Objectives

After completing the course students will:

Knowledge
• Be able to describe the main features of the historical development of child welfare
• Be able to describe the sphere of work and the various roles of child welfare workers today
• Have basic knowledge of children’s legal status
• Be able to explain the concept of culture and give examples of multicultural child welfare
• Have knowledge of the child welfare worker’s ethical values
• Have basic knowledge of children’s and adolescents’ development from an educational and psychological perspective
• Be able to give an account of the environments children and young people grow up and are socialised in
• Have a basic understanding of the importance of relationships in child welfare work

Skills
• Be able to use groups as a learning method during the course of studies
• Have a reflective attitude to their own behaviour when meeting others
• Be able to take responsibility for their own learning and that of others

Professional competence
• Have a basic understanding of the child welfare worker’s area of work from a multicultural perspective

Course Description

The content of the course is based on the national curriculum’s requirements regarding the distribution of credits, which functions as a guideline for the clarification of the course plan.

Sociology and anthropology - 2 ECTS credits; the legal system, legal methods and administrative law - 1 ECTS credit; general, developmental and social psychology - 2 ECTS credits; general and special education - 1 ECTS credit; social pedagogy - 2 ECTS credits; ethics and the professional roles - 4 ECTS credits; communications, interaction and conflict resolution - 3 ECTS credits; community work - 1 ECTS credit; activities subject – 2 ECTS credits; working with groups, organisations and networks - 2 ECTS credits.

Learning Methods

Lectures; introduction to group work; reflection work; independent study; meeting child welfare professionals from the practice field and individual written work.

Assessment Methods

Course Code: 070-E1: Child welfare work - assessment assignment
A 6-hour examination based on child welfare work. Individual assignment under supervision. Graded marks.
There are as many as three course requirements, which must be approved before the completion of the course can be approved. The course requirements are described in the course plan.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
