Tourism and Society 5400

Course Description

The course will provide students with a basic introduction to and an understanding of national and international tourism activities. Students will be introduced to the principal concepts used in the study of tourism, and learn to use these in a systematic analysis and discussion of tourism themes. Further, the students will gain an overview of the principal players and their positions within the field of tourism. The students will also learn to give an account of how tourism activities affect society in various ways by using appropriate methods and approaches. In addition, students will be provided with a basic introduction to sales and marketing.

Assessment Methods

Portfolio assessment with the following elements: a) written individual mid-term examination, 3 hours (30%), b) group assignment (20 %) and final written individual examination, 4 hours (50 %). Students must receive passing marks on all parts of the assessment.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
