Energy and Material Balances KJ4006

Course Description

Material and energy balances:

  • Processes and process variables.
  • Basic material balances of process units and total process for regular stationary processes.
  • Degrees of freedom
  • Material balances and combustion processes
  • Energy balances and one-phase systems with and without reactions
  • Energy balances and multiphase systems
  • Energy balances and non-reactive systems
  • Energy balances and reactive systems, and combustion processes
  • Calculation of adiabatic flame temperature

Alternative energy systems:

  • Relation between society and energy consumption
  • Energy situation on a world basis – resources, consumption, distribution and development trends
  • Alternative energy systems – mode of operation, energy flows, potentials and possibilities.
    • Solar energy
    • Wind
    • Water
    • Wave
    • Tidal wave
    • Saliency analysis
    • Geothermal
    • Heat pumps
    • Biofuel
  • Integration of new energy-carriers and sources – production, transport and end-consumption.
    • Hydrogen
    • Fuel cells

Assessment Methods

Continuous assessment counts for 30%.

The final examination counts for 70%.

In order to achieve a passing grade for the course a total assessment will be made of the student’s continuous assessment and final examination. This total assessment must satisfy minimum requirements represented by the grade E. In addition the final examination test must have the grade E or higher.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
