Introduction

Norwegian Folk Music 3 is a 60 ECTS study programme that is taught over 2 semesters at the Faculty of Folk Culture, Art and Teacher Education, Telemark University College. It builds on Norwegian Folk Music 1 and 2. In this study programme students will further develop their own musical expression and continue to build up a basic understanding of the dissemination of folk music.

Target Group and Admission Requirements

The target group are primarily students who have completed Norwegian Folk Music 1 and 2, and who aim to gain a Bachelor’s degree in Norwegian Folk Music. Students who have studied similar programmes in Norway may also apply for admission.

Aim of the Programme

The main aim of the study programme is to develop students’ expertise on the basis of the two years of preceding study in the subject. Students will be encouraged to develop an independent approach to the dissemination and performance of folk music. They should be embark on their own R & D work / field work, and acquire experience and theoretical knowledge of research and development studies within the field.

The study programme is taught over two semesters. The practical / theoretical common component comprising 30 ECTS is taught in the first semester.
The course units in this semester include, Traditional Knowledge, R & D, Folk Music Dissemination, Folk Music and Society, Main Instrument and Ensemble Playing / Arrangements.
The specialisation component, which takes the form of a project with a report, is taught in the second semester. The project may focus on performance / mediation or toward a more theoretical analysis of a traditional area. A period of study abroad may also be possible in this semester. Students will be allocated a supervisor in their work on the project.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, group work, workshop practice, excursions and self-study. The instruction will be organised into intensive blocks in the first semester. In the second semester, the study programme will be more project oriented and students will work individually and in groups to plan and perform concerts, tours and other forms of activities.
The study programme will also include excursions.

Assessment Methods

The third year of study of Norwegian Folk Music comprises 60 ECTS and includes two main examinations.

Examination of the theoretical common component is a 6-hour written final examination (first semester).

Examination of specialisation component will be completed with an oral examination where the student may be assessed in both theoretical and practical elements.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
