Introduction

Mathematics is an important aspect of our culture, both as a science and as a tool in a variety of fields, including other sciences. Mathematics also plays a major role in many forms of creative activity. This is why mathematics is a major subject in primary and secondary schools as well as in general teacher-education. In learning mathematics while studying to become teachers, the students will meet the subject in a variety of contexts. In addition to honing their teaching skills and understanding of mathematics, we will emphasize the nature of the subject and how children learn mathematics.

The target areas are described in greater detail in the National Curriculum for General Teacher Education (2003).

The study programme is fully booked for the academic year 2009/10.

The distance-learning course in Mathematics 1 examines topics that are relevant for mathematics in the primary and lower secondary school, and places these into a didactic context. It is divided into two modules, with final examinations at the end of autumn and spring semesters. In addition to the written examination, students will also submit a subject didactic assignment related to each of the modules. Students will be offered guidance/feedback on their assignments.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Most of the communication takes place through 8 letters containing course materials, 4 for each module, and through the course’s virtual classroom in the web-based learning platform Fronter.

Assessment Methods

A separate grade is allocated for each of the modules. The final grade for each module based on the work in subject didactics counts for 20% of the grade, and a 6-hour written examination counts 80%.
A grade will be given from A to F, where E is the lowest passing grade. Refer to Telemark University College’s Examinations Regulations for more information.
