Introduction
This study programme embraces history, geography and civics and is a wide-ranging, programme that provides students with insight into and understanding of historical and contemporary aspects of society with an emphasis on the modern history of Norway and Europe. The study programme provides an effective tool for understanding current events.
The programme runs over one year and is organised into 2 modules - module 1 (15 ECTS credits), which ends in autumn 2009, and module 2 (15 ECTS credits), which ends in spring 2010.
Social Studies 2 and Social Studies 1 (with emphasis on Norway and the Middle East) can be taken independently of each other. Students who take both programmes will attain a one-year programme (60 ECTS credits) in Social Studies.
Social Studies 2 is offered in Porsgrunn 2009 / 2010 and Social Studies in Notodden.

60 ECTS credits in Social Studies in combination with a Bachelor’s degree in teaching will provide the basis for admission to the Master’s degree programme in Cultural Studies at Bø campus.
Target Group and Admission Requirements
The programme is primarily aimed at teaching in primary and secondary schools, but is also relevant for those who are interested in a variety of topics within the field of social studies.
The teaching of the study programme starts at a level commensurate with a passing grade in the subject at the upper secondary school level. Students with inadequate knowledge of the subject should review it in order to attain the level at which the programme begins.

Theory and Practical Training
Students in their third year who take the subject as part of a general teacher education programme must complete a period of teaching practice (refer to the Teaching Practice Plan at HiT). Students who have completed their teaching practice will complete a subject didactics assignment.
Assessment Methods
The final grade consists of:
MODULE 1 (15 ECTS, ends in the autumn):
- Individual oral examination (counts 2 / 3)
- Term paper, group (counts 1 / 3)
MODULE 2 (15 ECTS, ends in the spring):
- Individual Bachelor thesis (counts 1 / 3)
- Individual written examination (counts 2 / 3)
Modules count 50% each.
A single grade is entered on the diploma, graded from A to F where A is the highest, and E the lowest passing grade. Each part of the assessment must receive a passing grade.
