Learning outcome

After graduating, students will be able to:

  • Give an account of the content, form and themes of the syllabus texts, and discuss them in their literary historical context
  • Provide a description of the central Norwegian and Nordic authors and their works before 1900, and discuss their literary historical placement
  • Discuss the various literary genres and genre-theoretical concepts

Course Description

Norwegian literature from the Middle Ages until about 1900.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Autumn semester, 6 hours per week for a period of 15 weeks. Lectures and seminars.

The course is part of the Bachelor’s degree in Literature and Language with a specialization in Norwegian, as well as the 1-year programme in Norwegian; the course is mandatory for students who wish to be qualified to teach Norwegian in primary and secondary schools.

Assessment Methods

Individual home assignment which counts for 40%, and a 5-hour final examination which counts for 60%. Students must achieve passing grades in both the assignment and the final examination. Both must be written in nynorsk.
