Practical English 2010

Learning outcome

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to use English in a correct and idiomatic manner, both orally and in writing. The student will also be able to reflect on the relationship between linguistic expressions and content, including how specific grammatical constructions affect meaning. The student will acquire fluency and correct pronunciation skills, which will enable him/her to express himself/herself accurately.

Course Description

The course will examine various aspects of English usage. The written component will focus on the formal aspects of written discourse such as sentence style, vocabulary and text flow. The spoken part of the course will cover problematic aspects of the student’s pronunciation in addition to debate and presentation skills.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The course comprises two hours of instruction per week. The course is organised to encourage active student participation and the training of practical skills through textual analysis, editing exercises and oral presentations. An attendance rate of at least 75 per cent is required.

Assessment Methods

Continuous assessment consists of one obligatory written assignment, an oral examination which counts for 40% of the final grade, and a final written examination which counts for 60%. Students must meet the attendance reqirement of 75 % in the lectures in order to qualify for the final examination. The student must receive passing grades in both the mid-term and final examinations in order to receive a final passing grade for the course. Grades will be awarded on a scale from A to F, where E is the lowest passing grade.
