Learning outcome

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of:

- Intermediate design theory, and has worked with complex designs

- Basic ceramics chemistry

- Various kilns and firing techniques in schools. This includes knowledge of safety issues in working with clay, glazes and kilns with children and adolescents

Skills

The candidate can/has:

- Cast plaster moulds with complex and produce larger works in clay

- Produce objects using high fire clays and glazes, and has knowledge of glazes such as oxblood, celadon, ten moku and others

- Mastered various firing techniques and working with both gas and electric kilns

- Experience exploiting the artistic and communicative properties of clay

- Use his/her glazing skills and technical skills in producing more advanced work in clay

- Carry out instruction in secondary school focusing on clay’s sculptural possibilities

General competence

The candidate has:

- Experience in using the expressive and communicative possibilities of clay

Course Description

The course includes three-dimensional work in clay with images and sculpture, and work ranging from images to utility objects. Students will gain experience with the expressive and communicative possibilities of clay.

The course will emphasize experimentation and training in modelling forms and developing an understanding of form. Surface structures and relief effects will be focused on.

Students will be able to make plaster moulds of complex forms. They will develop glazes at a higher level than the course Clay 1.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching will be carried out in the college’s pottery workshop, which will include an introduction, seminars, and tutorials. Students are expected to put in considerable effort in the workshop.

Assessment Methods

A grade will be given from A to F, where E is the lowest passing grade. Please refer to Telemark University College’s Examination Regulations for more information.
