The candidate:

- Can effectively throw pottery

- Masters the use of clay colours and working with ornamentation

- Masters the use of transparent and other low fire glazes and is able to use an electric kiln

- Can use his/her knowledge to work with clay from idea to finished product

- Evaluate their own and others’ work in ceramics, including children’s work

General competence

The candidate:

- Has an understanding of the relationship between design, surface, colour, function, and aesthetic expressions and is able to view this in a contemporary context

- Can carry out instruction in primary and secondary schools using clay as a working material

Course Description

The course will emphasise practice and training in using a potter’s wheel with low and high fire clays as well as clay colours and glazes. It will also provide basic training in designing utility objects in clay made on a potter’s wheel. The course provides a basic introduction to the use of ornamentation, with an emphasis on working with ceramic colours.

The course will also focus on creative work in clay where the student will acquire motor skills and technical and aesthetic knowledge in a continuous process from idea to finished product. He/she will acquire an understanding of the relationship between function, form, surface and colour, and aesthetic expression.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Teaching will be carried out in the school’s pottery workshop, which will include an introduction, seminars, and tutorials. Students are expected to put in considerable effort in the workshop.

Assessment Methods

Students must submit a portfolio before the stipulated deadline, which will include products, presentations of products, process description and reflection on practical training. A grade will be given from A to F, where E is the lowest passing grade.
