After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge:
The candidate:
- Is able to explain different perspectives on professionalism and quality, as well as professionalism and the teaching profession
- Is able to explain the special characteristics of the school as an arena for learning and development from a historical and contemporary perspective
- Has knowledge of relevant research and current academic and social challenges related to the 13-year school (primary and secondary education)
- Has knowledge of the school’s importance in relation to basic skills, school subjects and social learning
- Has knowledge of the school in an international perspective
Skills:
The candidate can:
- Analyse critically the school’s content and structure in relation to laws and curricula
- Participate in and make reasoned academic contributions to debates concerning ongoing reform and development in schools
- Supervise work with curricula and curriculum design in schools, with an emphasis on local curricula
- Plan, implement and evaluate minor research projects related to schools, independently and/or with others
- Supervise employees, colleagues and students on educational topics
General competence
The candidate can:
- Carry out critical evaluation with an emphasis on school-based assessment and improvement of pupils’ learning
- Exercise critical reflection in relation to improvement and quality in schools
- Reflect and act ethically, including in relation to pupils’ different backgrounds, for instance in connection with social and ethnic inequality
- Reflect critically on the quality of Norwegian schools in light of national and international research
Course Description
The course focuses on primary and secondary education in schools and organisations covering the age group 6-19 years of age. The course Professional Knowledge: Schools will provide students with the opportunity to specialise in leadership positions in schools and education. This may involve leadership of learning in small groups and classes, and positions as middle-level leaders in schools or head teachers. This may also include leadership tasks related to school and education in a local municipality or county authority, or research and development activities related to the school as a potential venue for learning and development.

Seminars, group work, field work.
Assessment Methods
Individual written assignment which will be assessed with a grade, which counts for 100% of the course grade.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
