Learning outcome
After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.
Knowledge
The candidate has knowledge of:
- The content and justifications of key national and international regulations concerning pupils and their rights
- The values, interests and norms in different youth cultures and how practical and aesthetic approaches can assist in managing and preventing conflicts and bullying
- The importance and challenges of creating an inclusive learning environment
- The development of school and the roots of pedagogy

Skills
The candidate can:
- Organise an effective learning environment
- Utilize local businesses and organisations, culture and society in the pupils’ educational processes
- Facilitate entrepreneurship in instruction
- Analyse relevant educational research
- Apply the knowledge, commitment and means to develop themselves, their subject and their profession in collaboration with colleagues and other stakeholders
General competence
The candidate can:
- Identify and assess various professional ethical dilemmas and the consequences that different solutions can have for the school and their own professional practice
- Establish and maintain a dialogue with the pupils and their parents
- Assess the school’s challenges and opportunities in a diverse and international society
- Promote an understanding of democracy and democratic participation and make reasoned values choices
Course Description
The course is designed to build understanding and insight into what characterises an effective learning environment. Further, attention is directed towards the school’s educational mandate and possible professional-ethical dilemmas facing teachers. The course also emphasizes the importance of the understanding of a fundamental professional approach and of developing change and development expertise in order to deal with a school context characterized by diversity and development.
Teaching and Learning Methods
The course includes the following teaching and learning methods:
- Lectures
- Seminars
- Study of subject literature
- Class and study groups
- Supervision and assessment
Compulsory attendance
Parts of the course require compulsory attendance (see the semester plan). Regarding compulsory attendance in the study program the Faculty of Art, Folk Culture and Teacher Education (EFL) guidelines will apply; this should be considered in relation to the rights and obligations of the student as stipulated in Telemark University College’s Examination Regulations, and in relation to the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges § 40 and § 46.3.

The course is assessed on the basis of:
- Portfolio consisting of a group assignment and two individual assignments. The group assignment counts 20% of the grade, and the individual assignments 40% each.
A final grade is awarded, graded from A to F, where A is the best and E the lowest passing grade. Please refer to Telemark University College’s examination regulations for further information.
