Learning outcome
The course is divided into three topic-periods: hiking - forests/mountains, sailing - coastal, and canoeing - watercourses.
After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.
Knowledge
The candidate has knowledge of:
- Planning trips according to ability
- Guidelines for outings
- Clothing and equipment and their proper use
- Weather and weather signs relevant to the planning and execution of trips
- Shelter and camping, food, campfires and cooking equipment
- Orientation/navigation, determining location and choice of route
- Self-rescue, rescuing others and first aid
- Nature and cultural topics of relevance to the various natural environments
- Laws and regulations, and the importance of leaving no traces behind
- Fishing, hunting and harvesting
- Maintenance of boats, canoes, rigging and sails
Skills
The candidate can:
- Orient themselves and make appropriate route choices in the forests and mountains
- Take part in hiking trips in groups, following basic procedures
- Sail and row small boats rigged with spritsails: tacking, reach, range and height, drift, ballast and packing of boats
- Sail and participate in rowing trips in groups, assess currents, choose harbours and mooring, manoeuvre, share tasks and roles, and carry out basic procedures
- Paddle a canoe on flat water and in rapids, choose routes on flat water, inspect rapids and choose routes through them
- Paddle a canoe on trips in groups, following basic procedures
- Choose suitable campsites and put up tents, lavvus, lean-to shelters, etc.
- Carry out self-rescue, and rescue others on flat water and rapids
- Swim and wade
- Maintain physical energy on trips
General competence
The candidate has:
- Enough stored energy when participating on trips, and can select trips according to ability, choose areas, and carry out safety, responsibility and consequence analysis
- The ability to maintain their own and the safety of the group on overnight trips
- Knowledge of didactics and methodology linked to the training of beginners
- The ability to create safe and well-functioning learning spaces
- The competence to teach safe guidelines, procedures, organization and working methods in relation to beginners
- The ability to teach nature and cultural topics
Course Description
- Implementation of longer trips in various natural environments
- Tour planning and trip guidelines, leaving no traces behind
- Hiking, rowing, sailing and canoeing
- Orientation and navigation
- Self-rescue, rescuing others and first aid
- Shelter and camping, campfires, cooking utensils and cooking
- Hygiene and first aid
- Weather and weather signs
- Nature and cultural topics
- Guiding theory: trip guidelines, procedures, organization, working methods and management related to the various natural environments
Teaching and Learning Methods
- 10 lectures
- 15 days with a supervisor
- 10 days of individual trips
Assessment Methods
100% participation is required in practical activities, along with a portfolio for each of the natural environments. One of the portfolios will be selected and assessed with a grade. The course grade is awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for fail. The other two portfolios will be assessed with a pass/fail mark; both portfolios must receive passing marks before the candidate can receive a passing mark for the course.
Assessment methods are chosen to assess the candidate's knowledge, skills and competence in relation to communicating the subject; please refer to the learning outcomes above.
The paddling course is, in content and level, comparable to the Norwegian Canoe Association's basic course and techniques course.
