Learning outcome

After successfully completing the course, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of:

  • The history and development of outdoor life guiding
  • Didactic relational thinking
  • The principles of teaching and learning
  • Group processes
  • Motivation and mastering skills
  • Outdoor life in primary and lower secondary schools
  • Safety in relation to education
  • Possible links between outdoor life and health

Skills

The candidate can:

  • Explain basic educational ideas with relevance to outdoor life pedagogy
  • Explain key elements within Norwegian outdoor guiding
  • Plan outdoor life activities on the basis of a didactic relational model where safety is taken into account
  • Give an account of various learning theories
  • Explain various theories with relevance to group processes

General competence

The candidate:

  • Can plan, implement and evaluate teaching programs
  • Has knowledge of didactics and methodology linked to training
  • Can plan and execute trips for adapted groups at different levels and with different abilities
  • Teach outdoor activities, with a special focus on schools

Course Description

  • The concept of learning, including experiential learning
  • The group as a social phenomenon and working method
  • Didactic and methodological issues related to outdoor life teaching
  • Outdoor life as a teaching and learning method in schools, curricula and outdoor education
  • Planning, implementation and evaluation of educational programs
  • Skills, trip guidelines, basic procedures and safety issues
  • The guidance role and its various functions

Teaching and Learning Methods

  • 16 lectures
  • 5 days of seminars
  • 1 day of practical training in a school with preparation
  • 5 days of individual teaching practice

Assessment Methods

Students will take a three-day home examination. The course grade is awarded on a descending scale using alphabetic grades from A to E for passes and F for a fail.

Completion of practical training and participation in seminars are mandatory.
Assessment methods are chosen to assess the candidate's skills in pedagogical and didactic reflection; please refer to the learning outcomes above.
