505 Clay, Art and Design 1

Introduction

Clay, Art and Design 1 covers basic skills in working with and forming clay. The study programme focuses on design and modelling of utility objects and sculpture. The four courses included in the study programme are divided into: throwing objects on a potter’s wheel, modelling sculpture, ethnographic knowledge and skills, and how clay is used in the modern/contemporary area. Firing techniques and knowledge of glazes are also covered.

Target Group and Admission Requirements

Students who wish to gain basic training in crafts, design and work with various clay materials.

Students must meet general admission requirements or apply for admission on the basis of prior experiential learning. Clay, Art and Design 1 may be included as part of a self-composed Bachelor’s study programme. The study programme builds on general admission requirements or prior experiential learning.

Who is the study programme aimed at?

  • Students may take the one-year study programme (60 ECTS) or the individual courses separately (15 ECTS each). The study programme and its courses offer continuing education for teachers of arts and crafts in the primary and lower secondary school.
  • The study programme is also suitable for students who wish to teach at folk high schools, music and art schools or similar.
  • Students who wish to take a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree.
  • Students who wish to pursue an education in the field of art and design.

Aim of the Programme

The study programme will develop students’ knowledge, experience and creative skills. Thus, understanding and experience of the aesthetic values related to design, art, clay as material, communication, function and didactics, will be strengthened. Students will develop an awareness of the subject’s potential and values, in which humankind, learning, culture and the environment are central.

Learning outcome

After successfully completing the study programme, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of:

  • Art and design culture within ceramics, and has developed competence in relation to tradition and renewal

Skills

The candidate:

  • Has mastered the use of creative processes in problem solving, product development and creative work
  • Can work systematically to acquire motor skills and technical knowledge that will enable them to realize ideas and produce concrete results
  • Has developed basic skills in design
  • Has acquired the ability to independently formulate and solve problems
  • Can visualize and document the creative process from idea to finished product

General competence

The candidate:

  • Has acquired knowledge, awareness and ability to express themselves through creative work using clay
  • Can apply theories of form, colour and composition to evaluate their own and others’ creative work

The study programme is comprised of 4 courses (15 ECTS each):

  • Working with Clay from an Ethnological Perspective
  • Sculptural Expressions in Clay
  • Throwing Clay
  • Clay in a Contemporary Perspective

Teaching and Learning Methods

Students will mainly work independently and under the guidance of the teacher in the workshops. Through guidance in the workshop sessions, theory and reflection will be related to the student’s own creative work. The academic year comprises 1,600 working hours, including approximately 300 hours of lectures, tutorials and seminars (further clarification is given in the course descriptions and semester plans) .The study programme emphasises creative work in clay. It includes the following varied teaching methods:

  • demonstrations
  • practical exercises
  • skills training
  • lectures
  • group work
  • dialogue with teachers and other students
  • various types of documentation and dissemination, which may include oral presentations, exhibitions, posters and reports

The study programme builds on the principle of theory integrated in practice. Emphasis will be given to professional reflection in relation to artistic processes involving visual and concrete materials.

Theory and Practical Training

The study programme is not a part of teacher education studies.

Assessment Methods

Continual informal supervision and evaluation is part of the learning process and a means for the student to gain greater insight into their own academic requirements for their further studies and future professional careers. Students are responsible for keeping themselves informed about assignments, deadlines, study programme requirements, etc. Portfolios with course work will be submitted, assessed and allocated with a grade in the individual courses. Lectures, seminars, introductions and reviews are considered within the rule of 80% compulsory attendance

Examination

Each course is evaluated separately on the basis of the contents of the portfolio with exhibited products and a reflection paper.

Grades A to F will be awarded, where A is the highest and E is the lowest passing grade.

The grades for each of the four courses will be entered on the diploma.
