Introduction

Wood and Metal: Art Crafts and Design 1 focuses on the development of students’ fundamental knowledge through their creative work. The study programme consists of the following courses: Material, Equipment and Techniques, Art Expressions in Wood and Metal, Design and Product Development, and Architecture. The study programme focuses on the utility objects and sculpture in wood and metal. The program will provide a platform for professional development and encourage an awareness of the field’s potential and values with respect to the individual and society.

Target Group and Admission Requirements

Students who wish to acquire a basic education in crafts, design and working with the materials wood and metal. Students must meet general admission requirements or apply for admission on the basis of prior experiential learning. Wood and Metal: Art Crafts and Design 1 may be included in a self-composed Bachelor’s study programme. The study programme builds on general admission requirements or prior experiential learning.

Who is the study programme aimed at?

  • Both as a one-year study programme and as courses (15 ECTS each). The study programme and its courses offer continuing education for teachers of arts and crafts in the primary and lower secondary school.
  • The study programme is also suitable for students who wish to teach at folk high schools, music and art schools or similar.
  • Students who wish to build up a multidisciplinary Bachelor’s degree.
  • Students who wish to pursue an education in the field of art and design

Aim of the Programme

The study programme focuses on the development of the student’s knowledge, experience and creative skills. Understanding and experience of aesthetic values are ​​related to design, art, architecture, sculpture through work with wood and metal. Communication and function will be strengthened. Students will develop an awareness of the subject’s potential and values, in which man, learning, culture and the environment are central.

Learning outcome

After successfully completing the study programme, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of:

  • The principal movements and historical development of art and design culture, nationally, internationally and in a multicultural society
  • Various professional tools
  • Various types of learning and perception related to aesthetic and practical creative activities
  • Constructive materials and can use various combinations of materials in working with sculpture and architecture as a form of expression

Skills

The candidate has / can:

  • Developed basic skills in the area of architecture and sculpture with respect to three-dimensional expression and spatial forms
  • Developed basic skills and understanding of design, and the ability to express themselves through creative work with wood and metal as the main materials
  • Gained experience with constructive materials and can use various combinations of materials in working with sculpture and architecture as a form of expression
  • Developed basic skills in design development through problem-solving processes and can assess the relationships between the choice of material, techniques, function and form
  • Document and visualize creative process from idea to finished product
  • Gained experience with the organization and maintenance of suitable tools and workshops for practical creative activities, both for two and three-dimensional materials and forms of expression

General competence

The candidate can:

  • Discuss and reflect on values which the subject can contribute to culture and society
  • Discuss how our relationship to objects and architecture around us affects our everyday lives
  • Lead and guide children and young people in various creative processes in the choice of purpose, form, function, materials, tools and techniques

Teaching and Learning Methods

Students will mainly work independently and under the guidance of the teacher in the workshops. Through guidance in the workshop sessions, theory and reflection will be related to the student’s own creative work. The academic year comprises 1,600 working hours, including approximately 300 hours of lectures, tutorials and seminars (further clarification is given in the course descriptions and semester plans) .The study programme emphasises creative work in wood and metal. It includes the following varied teaching methods:

  • Demonstrations
  • Practical exercises
  • Skills training
  • Lectures
  • Group work
  • Dialogue with teachers and other students is an important part of the study programme
  • Various types of documentation and dissemination, which may include oral presentations, exhibitions, posters and reports

The study programme builds on the principle of theory integrated in practice. Emphasis will be given to professional reflection in relation to artistic processes involving visual and concrete materials.

Student participation / academic affairs committee

Each class has a student representative and a deputy. These representatives participate in the faculty’s democratic processes. The class also has its own academic affairs committee which consists of 2-3 students who function as a link between the teaching team and the class. When appropriate the committee may participate in team meetings in order to discuss matters in connection with planning and the class’s activities. The academic affairs committee will meet at least once per semester. The subject teacher and class leader are responsible for ensuring that representatives are appointed and for arranging the first meeting. Minutes will be recorded at the meetings. These will be delivered to the study programme coordinator and the head of the department.

Participation in the class’s and campus’s democratic processes is both a student right as well as a responsibility.

Theory and Practical Training

The study programme is not a part of teacher education studies.

Assessment Methods

Continual informal supervision and evaluation will be part of the learning process and a means for the student to gain greater insight into their own academic requirements for further studies and future professional careers. Students are responsible for keeping themselves informed about assignments, deadlines, study programme requirements, etc. Portfolios with course work will be submitted, assessed and allocated with a grade in the individual courses. Lectures, seminars, introductions and reviews are considered within the rule of 80% compulsory attendance

Examination

Each course is evaluated separately on the basis of the contents of the portfolio with exhibited products and a reflection paper.

Grades A to F will be awarded, where A is the highest and E is the lowest passing grade.

The grades for each of the four courses will be entered on the diploma.
