Introduction

The study programme is aimed at teaching according to current curricula for arts and crafts in year levels 5-10 in the primary and lower secondary schools; the content and structure reflects the target group’s age, development and characteristics. The study programme emphasizes versatile creative work using various materials and techniques in a learning environment that stimulates impressions, experiences and expression within the framework of quality and sustainable development. Impressions and knowledge of national and international cultural heritages in terms of art and forms of expression from various eras will be included as part of the study programme. Art and crafts in a multicultural society that includes the Sami heritage will be made apparent. All-round professional use of basic skills (cf. LK06) will be emphasized.

Professional competence and the ability to reflect didactically will be developed through practical creative work, theoretical studies and practical experiences.

Target Group and Admission Requirements

Students should have completed courses equivalent to 30 ECTS credits in art and crafts. It is also possible to apply for admission on the basis of prior experiential learning.

The target groups are:

• Students enrolled on a general teacher education programme
• Teachers who wish to continue their professional education

The study programme may be studied as:

• An elective subject in the General Teacher Education (GLU) 5-10 specialization study programme.
• Continuing education for teachers.
• Part of a multi-subject Bachelor’s degree.
• Others who wish to develop basic expertise in art and crafts.

Aim of the Programme

The study programme aims to develop the student’s:

• Ability to express themselves in creative work using various materials and techniques for problem-solving- creative- and analytical activities
• Ability to visualize, document and present all the parts of a creative process and in relation to the assessment of their own and others’ creative work in arts and crafts
• All-round didactic skills in the field of practice as an important arena and basis for reflection, and basic competence related to the development of arts and crafts

Learning outcome

After successfully completing the study program, the candidate will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence.

Knowledge

The candidate has knowledge of:

• The main trends in the visual arts and sculpture, crafts, design and architecture
• The main features of the discipline’s history and development
• The key theories relating to the development of artistic expression in children and adolescents, and of play and creative activities as aesthetic experience and as forms of expression
• Entrepreneurship and innovation

Skills

The candidate can:

• Develop an idea into a finished design through the use of materials, tools and techniques; show manual dexterity, document and evaluate their own creative process; and organize various types of exhibitions and presentations
• Communicate and analyse art and design culture in varied ways and relate various art and cultural expressions to their own and pupils’ creative work
• Use digital tools in a varied way in working with the subject

General competence

The candidate can:

• Use cultural differences in the pupil group as a resource in arts and crafts teaching
• Exploit the subject’s opportunities to promote reuse and sustainable development
• Use arts and crafts in interdisciplinary theme and project work and emphasise the aesthetic dimension in education in collaboration with other subjects

Internationalization

Telemark University College is associated with NORDPLUS, Nordflo and Edda which offers students the option of studying various Nordic courses within the subject area.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The study programme includes various teaching and learning methods such as:

Students must submit their assignments and coursework requirements before the stipulated deadlines. In order to be awarded a final passing grade all the coursework requirements must have been approved by the course coordinator.

Teaching and learning methods will vary depending on whether students are enrolled on a campus-based study programme or an online study programme including workshops.

Campus-based study programme:

Students work mainly independently and under supervision of a teacher in the workshop. Through guidance in the workshop sessions, theory and reflection will be related to the student’s own creative work. Lectures, seminars and various types of externally-oriented activities will be included in the teaching and learning methods; this will include exhibitions and digital presentations. Various group processes may be included as part of the learning methods. The study programme will be characterised by alternation between practical creative work, theoretical orientation and didactic reflection. Visits to various exhibitions, collections, museums and galleries will be included in the study programme, and students will work with different kinds of exhibitions and other visual documentation; the presentations will be emphasised and integrated into every aspect of the study programme. Active participation in, and responsibility for, various common projects, for example, “Open Door”, constitutes a mandatory part of the study programme.

Web-based study programme with workshops:

Two courses of 15 ECTS credits – about 3 hours per week, and through the college’s learning platform Fronter with online classrooms for discussion forums, online meetings, writing posts and presentations, submissions, etc. The workshop meetings will prioritize activities in the workshop, including training in the use of tools and machines as well as group projects that focus on creative processes. At the first workshop session students will be given an introduction in the use of the online learning platform Nefsis. Mandatory regular weekly teaching sessions are given in real time online. The students work mainly independently and in groups with online guidance by a teacher. The study programme is characterized by alternation between practical creative work, theory and didactic reflection. Compulsory study trips may be carried out during the workshop meetings.

Theory and Practical Training

Teaching practice in primary / lower secondary school is an obligatory part of the study programme for students enrolled on a teacher education study programme.

Students who are taking the programme as part of a Bachelor’s degree will carry out an art or culture related dissemination project.

All parts of the study programme emphasise the relationship between creative work, theoretical orientation and didactic reflection.

Assessment Methods

Lectures, seminars, introductory courses, tutoring and assessments may be defined as mandatory and the student’s attendance and registration will be registered. A minimum of 80% attendance is required in order that the student will be permitted to take the examination.

Students are responsible for keeping themselves informed about assignments, deadlines, study programme requirements, etc. HiT uses Fronter as an online learning platform.

Examination

All the stipulated coursework requirements must be presented and approved by the teacher before the final evaluation at the end of each semester.

The final assessment will be related to selected pieces of work from the whole of the study period.

A grade will be awarded on the scale from A to F, where A is the highest and E the lowest passing grade.

Component grades will be averaged into a final grade which will be entered on the diploma.

Suitability

All students taking a teacher education study programme will be assessed for suitability. Suitability assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of the student’s academic, pedagogical and personal qualifications to work as a teacher. Continuous assessment of suitability will be carried out throughout the studies, and will be done according to specific criteria for assessment as specified in the Regulations for Suitability Assessment in Teacher Education established by the Ministry of Education and Research on 10 October 2005 pursuant to the Universities and Colleges’ Act, 1 April 2005 no. 15, § 4-10, sixth paragraph.
