2402 Social Studies 2: Year Level 5-10

Introduction

Social Studies 2, Year Level 5-10 consists of the courses SAM 503 and SAM 504.

SAM 503 focuses on Norway and Europe, specifically recent European and Norwegian history, knowledge of the regions and regional development in Europe, as well as the socialization and identity of children and youth.

SAM 504 explores what it means to live in a global world, with a focus on globalization, global history, the relationship between the natural environment and living conditions and specific global conflicts.

Target Group and Admission Requirements

Primary and secondary school student-teachers and teachers who wish to continue their education; and students who have completed Social Studies 1.

Aim of the Programme

Students will acquire knowledge, skills and general competence that will equip them for teaching social studies in the primary and lower secondary school.

Social Studies 503 and 504 provide a total of 30 ECTS credits over two semesters with modules of 15 ECTS credits each.

Internationalization

Internationalization agreements are applicable in the 3rd year of study.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The study programme uses varied and active teaching and learning methods such as class discussions, lectures, seminars, working with sources and writing assignments.

Assessment Methods

SAM 503: Individual assignment with fieldwork, which counts 1/3 of the final grade. Written five-day home exam, which counts 2/3 of the final grade.

SAM 504: Individual report, which counts 1/3 of the final grade. Oral exam, which counts 2/3 of the final grade.
