Learning outcome
Upon completion of the course the student should
- be able to use English in a correct and idiomatic manner, both orally and in writing
- be able to reflect on the relationship between linguistic expressions and linguistic content, including how specific grammatical constructions and word choice affect the message one is trying to send
- utilize grammatical knowledge to explain common errors and to correct and improve texts
- acquire good fluency and pronunciation to express him/herself accurately
Course Description
The course examines various aspects of English usage. The written component will focus on sentence style, vocabulary, sentence structure, and the most common grammatical mistakes. The spoken component of the course will cover problematic aspects of the student’s pronunciation in addition to presentation skills.
Teaching and Learning Methods
The course is taught every other autumn semester. There are two weekend gatherings of two days (together with the course English Grammar 2012N), short online lectures, and online task conversations. Course materials are mainly in the form of PowerPoint presentations and exercises with solution proposals. All materials will be regularly uploaded to Fronter.
Assessment Methods
- Written exam, 2.5 hours, counts 100% (graded mark)
- Work requirement (1), oral home assignment (pass/non pass)
- Work requirement (2), home assignment (pass/non pass)
All parts must be passed.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
