Physics and Chemistry FY3007

Course Objectives

To acquire a basic understanding of chemistry, classical mechanics and thermodynamics.

Course Description

Chemistry, 7 credits:
The structure of atoms and the periodic table, chemical binding, chemical equations and calculations, chemical names, solutions, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, electro-chemistry and organic chemistry.

Physics, 3 credits:
Mechanics: Force and motion. Newton's laws. Work, Energy and Power. Conservation of Energy.
Oscillations and Waves: Period and frequency. Waves in water. Interference.
Light: Refractive index. Particle-wave duality. Youngs experiment and Diffraction Gratings (interference).

Learning Methods

Lectures and practical assignments.

Assessment Methods

Chemistry: Two small examinations counting for 20%, and a final examination counting for 80%.
Physics: Final examination.

Both examinations are written. The small exams are during the semester. The final examination is in December.
In order to pass the course, the student must pass the final exam and at least 20 % must be correct both in chemistry and physics.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
