Language Variation and Standardisation 2109
Course Objectives
The students will acquire knowledge of how written Norwegian has evolved from the Danish period up until the present day, and how in recent times efforts have been made to standardise written Norwegian. The course will focus mainly on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Students will also gain knowledge concerning the debate regarding the standardisation of Norwegian speech in Norway.
Course Description
Language variation and standardisation from the Danish period up until the present day, with particular emphasis on the period after 1800.
Learning Methods
Fall semester, 3 hours of lectures per week. Lectures and seminars.
The course is a part of BA Literature and Language, specialisation in Norwegian.
Assessment Methods
Individual home assignment (roughly 4000 words) which counts for 40 %, and a 5-hour final examination which counts for 60 %. Students must receive passing marks in both the home assignment and the final examination in order to gain a passing mark for the course.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
