Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to give the students a broad introduction to the Romantic Period in Great Britain; i.e. the decades preceding and following the year 1800. The dramatic events of this period had a decisive influence on both the political and cultural situation; and the course will emphasise how present thinking in relation to art and society may be traced back to ideas of the Romantic Age.

Course Description

In order to present the many aspects of the period, the course will be taught in thematic segments. A wide variety of texts will be used: novels, poetry, letters, travel accounts, and political, philosophical and religious texts. Among the themes that will be explored are views on nature, the roles of art and the artist, geniuses and heroes, politics, religion and the status of women. Visual art from the period will be used as a supplement to the texts. All instruction and student activities will be conducted in English. Written and oral assignments are a mandatory part of the course.

Learning Methods

Lectures and seminars: Up to 3 hours weekly. Autumn semester.

Assessment Methods

At least one written assignment must receive a passing grade.
A 3-hour written mid-term examination will count for 40% of the final grade.
A 4-hour final examination will count for 60% of the final grade.
Students must achieve passing marks in both the ongoing assessment and the final examination in order to earn a final passing grade.
