Course Objectives

This course is designed to provide fundamental knowledge of modern Spanish. By the end of the course, the students will be able to carry on everyday conversations. They will also attain basic proficiency in written and oral communication in Spanish. The course will also prepare students for their first encounter with the societies and literature of Spanish speaking countries.

Course Description

The course is an elementary language course that will provide a fundamental knowledge of Spanish. It offers 15 ECTS, but cannot be counted as a specialist requirement towards a Bachelor degree. The course is designed for students who possess no previous knowledge of Spanish from secondary school, and can be taken as a basic course in Spanish.

Learning Methods

The course consists of lectures, seminars (6 hours per week), and language lab exercises throughout the autumn semester. Seminar participation is obligatory. The students are expected to actively participate in the course, and the evaluation of the students' progress will take place continually throughout the semester.

Assessment Methods

The examination is divided into 2 parts:
1) A 4-hour written examination which counts for 50% of the final grade.
2) An oral examination of 40 minutes duration, which counts for 50% of the final grade. The examination consists of: firstly, a discussion in Spanish of a topic which has been covered in the course, secondly, reading aloud Spanish text followed by a discussion of the texts.
Students must receive passing marks in both examinations in order to achieve a final passing grade for the course. Grades: From A to F, where E is the lowest passing grade.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
