Chemistry and the Environment FB3006
Course Objectives
To acquire a basic understanding of chemistry and the environment, and an appreciation of the causes and effects of those processes which result in environmental problems. The student will learn strategies to avoid or reduce environmental problems.
Course Description
Chemistry 7 credits: The structure of atoms and the periodic table, chemical binding, chemical equations and calculations, chemical names, solutions, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, electro-chemistry and organic chemistry.
Environment 3 credits: General ecology, air-pollution/purification of emissions to the atmosphere, water pollution/purification and discharges to water, refuse and its treatment, energy and the environment, working environments.
Learning Methods
Lectures and practical assignments.
Assessment Methods
Chemistry: One small examinations counting for 20%, and a final examination counting for 80%.
Environment: Final examination.
The small exams are during the semester. The final examination is in December.
In order to pass the course, the student must pass the final exam and at least 20 % must be correct both in chemistry and environment.
