Course Objectives

Students will gain knowledge of:

- The communication process and the characteristics of good communication.

- Language as a tool for good communication.

- Basic grammar; syntax; linguistic, stylistic and graphical tools.

- The major genres in written communication.

Students will gain skills in:

- Using language as a tool for various types of written and oral communication.

- Organising material.

- Evaluating/commenting on texts in a variety of factual literature.

- Using a wide range of sources to access knowledge and information.

Students will:

- Become more self-confident and comfortable with their own identity.

- Become aware of how they express themselves linguistically in various situations.

- Become aware of the significance of good communication in work and business situations.

Course Description

a) Obtaining information and cooperation

- planning of time and work

- finding sources, and checking their reliability

b) The language and the communication process

- the communication situation and definition of objectives

- target-group analysis

- structure, style, graphical and linguistic methods

- types of factual literature

- analysis of logic and relevancy

c) Written presentation

- the writing process

- structural principals and the organisation of material

- rules of writing, choice of terms and sentence construction

- logical presentation and analysis

- instruction and description

- business letters and applications

- debate contributions

- populisation

d) Oral presentation

- instruction and description

- presentations

- use of visualisation and other tools

Learning Methods

- lectures in large groups

- individual, pair and group exercises

Assessment Methods

Written submissions/tests 40% and written final examination 60%. Individual grade.
Final examiniation has to be passed to obtain a final grade.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
