Thermodynamics MA3106

Course Objectives

Students will learn to apply the basic principles of thermodynamics. They will acquire an understanding of the behaviour of ideal and real gasses, and how phase equilibrium of gas /liquid/solid material may be described with various state diagrams.

Course Description

State equations, critical pressure and temperature, thermodynamic properties, work and heat.

The 1st Law of Thermodynamics, changes in state, internal energy, enthalpy, entropy, specific heat, Gibb’s energy, chemical potential.

Heat of reaction, combustion heat, endothermic and exothermic reactions.

The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, reversible and irreversible processes, the Carnot process, power cycles. Thermal efficiency. The 3rd Law of Thermodynamics. Phase equilibriums, chemical equilibriums.

Learning Methods

Lectures, exercises and laboratory work.

Assessment Methods

Individual written final examination (60 %). Continuous assessment (40 %); this is a combination of 2-hour in-class examinations. The method of assessment is described in more detail in Classfronter, which the students may access when they begin the course.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
