Course Objectives

Students will learn how to plan and carry out microbiological analyses. They will learn how to analyse indicator bacteria and microbes that cause disease. Students will also gain knowledge of contagion paths, pathogenesis and environmental conditions that are important for micro-organisms.

Course Description

Work in the laboratory is important with the aim of learning diagnosis of the most important bacteria that cause disease. Laboratory procedures and other material will be handed out. A diagnosis of indicator bacteria from water and foodstuffs will be carried out. Much emphasis is placed on laboratory analyses. On the basis of this students will be able to choose methods for indicating various micro-organisms. They will also learn to understand and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the methods used in the laboratory. Seminars and lectures will discuss the various microbes.

Assessment Methods

Grades will be given for the two part-exams with portfolio evaluation: a laboratory report and a multiple-choice test count for 50%, and a final examination counts for 50% of the final grade. Both part-exams must receive passing marks, and the laboratory report and the multiple-choice test must be submitted before students can take the final examination.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
