Course Objectives
The aim of the course is to highlight environmental issues related to tourism.
Course Description
The course will examine tourism in relation to environmental questions, both at national and international levels. Tourism’s tendency to destroy the basis for its own existence will be a central topic of the course. Concepts such as ‘sustainable tourism’, ‘responsible tourism’, ‘green tourism’ and ‘ecotourism’ will be discussed. The damage to vulnerable areas will also be discussed and related, for instance, to topics such as conservation zones. Tourism and the greenhouse effect will also be emphasised.
Learning Methods
2-3 lectures per week in the spring semester. Lectures and casework. Seminar in which students present the assignment they have chosen.
Assessment Methods
Portfolio assessment with the following elements: a) presentation and submission of chosen term paper (40%) and b) written individual final examination, 3 hours (60%). Students must receive passing marks in both parts in order to obtain a final pass mark for the course.
Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
