Course Objectives

The course will provide students with fundamental insight into important environmental issues related to the tourism industry.

Course Description

The course will address environmental issues related to tourism, both at national and international levels. Tourism’s tendency to destroy the resource base for its own existence will be a central topic of the course. Concepts such as "sustainable tourism", "responsible tourism", "green tourism" and "ecotourism" will be discussed. Further, the course will focus on environmental damage in vulnerable areas, for example in conserved areas. Tourism and the greenhouse effect will also be focused on.

Learning Methods

3 lectures per week during the spring semester. Lectures and discussion exercises / case studies. Seminar in which students present the assignment they have chosen.

Assessment Methods

Portfolio assessment of the following elements: a) presentation and submission of chosen term paper (40%) and b) written individual final examination, 4 hours (60%). Students must receive passing marks in both parts in order to obtain a final pass mark for the course.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
