Course Objectives

Students will:
Gain knowledge of
- English as a tool for good communication
- Technical English and English technical terminology

Develop skills in
- Using English in written and oral communication
- Presenting various topics in English

Course Description

Main aims:

  • Knowledge aims: Students will acquire knowledge of English as a tool for effective communication, and knowledge of technical English and English technical terminology.
  • Skills: Students will develop skills in using technical terminology correctly, and in using English in written and oral communication in different contexts and for different purposes.
  • General competence aims: Students will in a reflective and reasoned way learn to use their knowledge and skills in the execution of various assignments, both independently and in groups.

Learning Methods

  • LANGUAGE & COMMUNICATION: Students will be able to:
    - Master English as a communication tool
    - Develop their knowledge of English technical terminology
    - Gain knowledge of the grammatical similarities and differences between Norwegian and English, also in technical English
    - Use English in formal and informal situations and contexts
    - Use the proper meeting terminology
    - Use information obtained from English sources in their own work.
  • CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE: Students will be able to:
    - Acquire information from the web about multicultural topics
  • WRITTEN WORK: Students will be able to:
    - Write logical presentations, for instance, about technical subjects
    - Write reports, letters, applications, notes and messages, and e-mails
    - Write instructions and descriptions
    - Translate from Norwegian to English
    - Write summaries
    - Write presentations
  • ORAL ENGLISH: Students will be able to:
    - Give presentations in English
    - Give instructions / demonstrations
    - Use the phone, make orders and enter into an agreement
    - Be able to participate in, and lead, meetings
  • PROJECT WORK: Students will be able to:
    - Draft an English summary of a project carried out in other preparatory courses
    - Complete a small project and write a brief report in English

Assessment Methods

Compulsory attendance in all lessons.

Letter grades A - F, where A is the highest grade and F is fail.
Portfolio assessment
- Assignments (individual and groups), assessed as pass / fail
- More formal tests and specialised ourse is given letter grades
Examination
Mandatory 3-hour final examination (alternatively, students can apply to take a final oral examination)
The final grade for the course is calculated in the following manner:
Written examinations (students should complete all the 6 tests and pass at least 4 of 6) -> 50%
Oral activities in the classroom (regularly active participation, written submissions and oral presentations) -> 20%
The final examination (3 attempts) -> 30%

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
