Material Science MA3206

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide a fundamental knowledge of materials technology and the property of materials, which will enable the appropriate choice of material. Construction materials technology provides knowledge concerning the important relationship between the structure and properties of various materials, and how, in practice, material properties may be managed and controlled through technological processes.

Course Description

The course covers the following subjects: Structure of construction materials. Plasticity and dislocation movement. Testing materials, destructive and non-destructive methods. Testing standards and material standards. State diagrams and alloy systems. Steel materials - heat treatment, hardening and weldability. Cast iron. Aluminium and copper alloys. Plastics, composites and ceramics.

Learning Methods

Lectures, demonstrations, laboratory practice and calculation exercises.

Assessment Methods

Mid term test counts 30%.
Final test counts 70%. The final examination must receive a passing grade.

Students must have completed 5 of 6 theoretical exercises and 4 laboratory exercises to be alloved to take the final test.
