Course Objectives

· To acquire background in the complex field of ‘environment, technology and society’ in association with a more specific branch of study.

· To develop competence in project administration, group dynamics, quality leadership, meeting organisation, report-writing and presentation techniques.

· To gain familiarity and competence in basic information and communications technology (ICT), general ICT tools, and ICT tools which might be considered useful for carrying out student projects.

Course Description

The course is an introduction to project work within the field of environment, technology and society, in association with a chosen theme or more specialised branch of study. The project group will practice problem-solving techniques, and will produce a report and a home page on the Internet. Topical themes within IT are school computer systems, operative systems, file processing, Internet applications, word processors, spreadsheets, simple graphics and photo processing, presentation tools, project-administration tools, web-page editing and a short introduction to the basic principles of programming. The topics and tools/software are dynamically adapted to the developments within the general field of IT.

Learning Methods

A total of 10 ECTS, of which 5 are associated with IT tools.

Project work in groups under supervision. Theme-based lectures on project methodology. The ICT instruction is organised in the form of lectures, practical assignments and independent study. Understanding and competence is enhanced through the active use of the students’ laptop computers.

Assessment Methods

Written group-practical assignments (project reports) which will be presented/demonstrated at the end of the semester, followed by an examination on the project. Together with submitted work and tests/examinations related to the lecture themes in project methodology and a final process description. (10 % written hand in, 30 % written project report, 10 % oral examination), students are examined in their knowledge and proficiency of ICT and ICT tools, (Continuous assessment (15 %) and final examination (35 %)). Students will receive individual grades. In order to pass the course, the student must pass both the written project report and the final ICT examination.
