General Chemistry 4101

Course Objectives

The course provides students with a basic knowledge of chemistry. They will learn to carry out simple chemical calculations and laboratory analyses. The course provides students with the basis for understanding many of the chemical processes in nature.

Course Description

 Stoichiometry, gasses and chemical equilibria
 Structure of atoms, chemical bonds and intermolecular forces
 Lewis-notation and VSEPR theory
 Acids and bases, buffers, titration and solutions
 Thermochemistry
 Electrochemistry
 Phase diagrams, solutions and colligative properties
 Reaction velocity

The laboratory course includes basic chemical experiments and analysis of chemical substances taken from nature and everyday life.

Learning Methods

55 hours of lectures and 20 hours of calculation practice. Obligatory: 27 hours of laboratory practice and 22 hours colloqium.

Expense for laboratory coat: About NOK 350,-.

Reports from the laboratory exercises should be sanctioned before the last exam.

Assessment Methods

Grades will be given for two part-exams. A mid-term examination (4 hours) counts for 50 % and a final examination (4 hours) counts for 50 % of the final grade.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
