Course Objectives

The students will acquire an understanding of the use, design and administration of database systems with a focus on data modelling (E/R), relational databases and SQL. The students will also gain experience in the use of database system tools.

Course Description

Use of database systems. SQL and the relational model. Data modelling with E/R, implementing E/R models as relational databases, normalization. Introduction to physical storage structures and indexes. Development of small database applications. Database administration with an emphasis on user administration. System architecture and important functions in a database management system.

Learning Methods

6 hours of lectures, exercises and guidance per week in the autumn semester.

Assessment Methods

A 5-hour written, individual examination. A number of obligatory assignments submitted during the course must be approved before the student will be permitted to sit the final examination.
