Course Objectives

The course will give students basic knowledge of modern computer network and communication technology. They will be able to build and operate small local area networks, as well as install, configure and manage servers for various services in a local area network and on the Internet.

Course Description

Media, hardware, design and topology of local area networks. Communication with peripheral equipment, ADSL, wireless networks, VLANs, firewalls, VPN etc. Communication standards, the OSI model and the TCP/IP protocol stack. Services in local area networks, wide area networks and Internet. Client-server systems and directory services. Network management and security. Network monitoring systems, data backup / recovery and network storage. Practical exercises will cover installation, configuration, use and management of Windows Server, Active Directory and Windows XP/Vista/7 clients in a "secure" lab-network.

Learning Methods

6-8 hours of lectures/exercises per week during the spring semester.

Assessment Methods

An individual, written 4-hour final examination. A number of obligatory assignments submitted during the course must be approved before the student may be permitted to sit the final examination.
