Bachelor’s Thesis – Final project IFFBACH

Course Objectives

The student will submit a Bachelor’s thesis - which will constitute an independent project.
The student will:

  • Limit the field of research; formulate one or more research questions or hypotheses.
  • Present and review process: procedures and results.
  • Use literature, databases, informants and other sources.
  • Use illustrations, the student’s own or others.

The thesis should include a didactic element for subject teachers - this applies to both the F3 and F4 students.

Visual Art & Design 3 (VKD3) has a professional didactic foundation.

(Students who take a “flexible Bachelor’s programme” in the second year of studies will write a final project dealing with the specific work process.)

Course Description

The student will submit a Bachelor’s thesis – which will constitute an independent project. The thesis should be a practical-oriented piece of work, which specializes within the areas of techniques, materials or themes – in which the student raises some interesting and relevant questions. The student will receive regular supervision; he/she will be expected to work methodically and systematically, keeping a clear and relevant focus.

The work can be carried out using most materials and techniques - but must keep within the selected area of study.

Subject teachers in practical and arts subjects may adopt an interdisciplinary approach where the project may also relate to the subjects, Norwegian, drama and music, as well as arts and crafts.

Learning Methods

The thesis should be presented with attachments and a report. It must be carried out individually and should integrate subject material from the course. The goal is to allow the student to gain experience in executing independent work on the subject with a research element, and provide an opportunity to specialise in one or several aspects of the subject, as well as develop the ability to carry out analytical and structured work.

As part of the assessment, the student’s effort and the scope of the work will be considered.

The student will prepare a reading list for the thesis of about 200 pages, which should be referenced in the report.

The thesis will consist of a practical-aesthetic work, thorough documentation, theoretical background and a written report with the usual requirements for report writing. It should be presented so that the approach chosen and working methods are readily apparent, and the work should be completed in an appropriate and satisfactory manner.

The student, in consultation with the teacher, will choose the topic / area of research.

Assessment Methods

It is a requirement for the Bachelor’s thesis / final project that the student has received counselling, and it is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher in order to arrange this.

The title of the Bachelor’s thesis / final project will be entered on the diploma. A grade will be given on a scale from A to F, where A is the highest and E the lowest passing grade. Please refer to Telemark University College examination Regulations for more information.

Minor adjustments may occur during the academic year, subject to the decision of the Dean
