Business English 6020
Course Objectives
The course is intended for students studying tourism, international marketing, as well as students who wish to improve their verbal and written skills within more specialised fields of business communication skills in English. European Level: B2.2.
Course Description
Students will learn to function in an international environment, increasing their competence and knowledge of written and verbal communication. They will become more familiar with social and cultural conditions in English-speaking countries. The course begins in the autumn with a review of general English grammar and intonation. Students will be given an opportunity to increase their vocabulary in economics with exercises in social English and verbal presentation. They will prepare their own CVs and other documents in job search processes. Further, students will read and discuss articles and chapters from the syllabus that will provide them with training and knowledge of business communication. In the spring semester, students will focus on writing business correspondence (letters, press releases, reports) through an e-mail project. The discussion of case studies from international business and the composition of formal written reports will also be emphasised.
Learning Methods
3 to 4 hours of lectures weekly during the autumn and spring semesters. Lectures, group work, individual obligatory written assignments, verbal presentations, reports, e-mail, case studies and discussions. The instruction will be in English.
Assessment Methods
Autumn semester: 4 mandatory, written, graded assignments. Oral examination with individual presentation and discussion of the syllabus. The mark for the autumn semester will count for 50% of the final grade.
Spring semester: 4 to 6 mandatory, written, graded assignments. Final written examination: 3 hours. The mark for the spring semester will count for 50% of the final grade. Students must achieve passing marks in all parts of the assessment to pass the course.
