Learning outcome

Students will work on an images project, and through versatile use and construction of images will learn how to examine a topic thoroughly. Students will increase their knowledge of a chosen topic and also develop their skills in producing visual artistic expressions. The course includes a joint and an individual component.

The students will:

• Carry out a thematic project involving images.
• Expand and develop their expertise in the field of drawing and communicating with images.
• Strengthen their visual, aesthetic and communicative skills.
• Focus on practical and theoretical / analytical work with images as a means of acquiring knowledge.
• Develop awareness of their own ability to express themselves and their own cultural background regarding the use of images.
• Develop their artistic skills.
• Gain from the experience of working with images.
• Learn to work independently with images.

Course Description

The course combines academic traditions within the field of visual communication; the course will alternate between theory and practice. Teaching and learning methods include explorative approaches, specialisation, processes for increasing student awareness of the subject, and independent working methods. The student will choose the form of expression, techniques, materials and styles suitable to his or her project.

In explorative practice, theory is used to understand practice, and practical experience illuminates theory.

The course will shed light on:

• How to implement an images project
• How a research and development project within the subject field can be carried out
• Visualizing thoughts, feelings and ideas
• Children and young people’s expressing themselves through images and their world understood through images

Students will also:

• Become aware of the interaction between group and individuals in theme-based teaching.
• Experience progress and development based on the interaction between action and reflection.
• Work actively and creatively with the culture of images.
• Study reality through drawing and learn to interpret reality through the pictorial representations of others.
• Analyse and evaluate new and old images, their work and others’.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The project is divided into joint and individual parts. However, individual work on images, with supervision constitutes the most important and time-consuming working method in the course. Assessment will be done in groups, and is an important part of the teaching.

Theoretical teaching is performed in parallel with practical work. Studies of images culture is important, and this may include: contemporary images, mass media images or art-historical images.

Assessment Methods

Students will be given information concerning the course requirements, which will include the following elements:

• Documented participation in joint activities
• Documented participation in theoretical instruction
• A written report of a practical assignment
• Documentation of sketches and processes
• Finished works
• Examples of teacher-led exercises
• Documented guidance
  

Assessment and feedback will be done orally in groups. The teaching team and fellow students will provide active feedback.

A grade will be given on a scale from A to F, where A is the highest and E the lowest passing grade. Please refer to Telemark University College Examination Regulations for more information.
