Learning outcome

The student will be able to:

• Evaluate, select and use materials based on the knowledge of their properties and applications.
• Explore the interaction between materials, tools and techniques in creative processes and products.
• Master textile techniques within the areas of thread techniques, printing techniques and embroidery.
• Use simple pattern construction and adaptation of patterns.
• Use IT - software as a tool and as a means of expression in creative processes.

Course Description

The course focuses on exploration and skills training so that students may develop knowledge of materials, tools and techniques. Students will become familiar with the tools and techniques required for working on and creating objects using textiles as the basic material. The subject content in this course provides an important foundation for other courses in the study programme. Students are expected to have an inquiring attitude towards gaining knowledge and should be familiar with both traditional and modern textiles.

The course includes several assignments that relate the course’s subject material to practical exercises. Some of the assignments will involve technical experimentation which may further be used as a starting point for exploration and new products.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Instruction will mainly be carried out in the classroom and the textiles workshop, and includes demonstrations, practical exercises, skills training and lectures. In addition to the joint teaching, supervision will be given individually and in groups. The interaction between creative work, theory and reflection constitutes an important part of the course and will be reflected in the teaching. Students are expected to put in considerable effort in the workshop, where work with textiles will require confidence and practice.

Assessment Methods

Students must submit a portfolio before the stipulated deadline, which will include the result of technical exercises, exploration, process description with photographic documentation, products and a report. A grade will be given from A to F, where E is the lowest passing grade.
